The Love of a Dog
Ginger Cochran
You have not known the love of a dog
until the one that sees only you...
and patiently she waits at the door
for the sound of your footsteps,
refusing to be dissuaded or moved from
her self-appointed sentry.
You have not known the love of a dog
until the one that refuses food
from another-
only when you make these offerings
does her tail wag in acceptance
as gladly she eats...
food from her master's hand.
You have not known the love of a dog
until the cruel ravages of age
cripple and slow
her once young and supple body,
and as her spirit begins to falter,
still through her bewilderment and fear
at her body's betrayal,
trustingly, she continues to have faith
that you will take care of her...
and though pain fills your heart at this final parting
from your dear and loyal friend,
your love is great and it will set her free!
No, you have not known the love of a dog
until this certain one comes along...
picking you as the object of her adoration.
Oh, how wonderful....
the undying love of the faithful dog.
