ROYAL OAK, Mich. -- Royal Oak officials are warning residents after two more rabid skunks have been found in the community.

Watch: Royal Oak Warns Of Rabid Skunks

Police said the skunks were found this week on the 4200 block of Seminole Street and the 1600 block of E. Fourth Street.

They were euthanized.

There have been four other incidents of skunks being caught and testing positive for rabies in the past two months.

"Be alarmed if you see these wild animals wandering about during the day," Royal Oak Police Lt. Gordon Young said. "If bitten by any wild animal or stray domestic animal, wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately."

Rabies is an infectious disease that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals.

Rabies is almost always fatal if not treated after exposure.

"The best way to protect yourself from getting infected with rabies is to never approach any stray or wild animals," Young said. "Don't feed them or touch them. Any abnormal behavior in animals may be a sign of a rabid animal."

Signs of rabies include overly friendly behavior, aggressive behavior, uncoordinated movement or apparent illness.

Dogs and cats with rabies may be aggressive or lethargic.

Animal Control Officers warn pet owners to make sure their pets are vaccinated.

Anyone in Royal Oak who sees a suspected rabid animal should call 248-246-3500 or your local police department.
