Did you know that "Pit Bulls" are currently the number one bred dog in the United States? Ironically, they are also one of the hardest breeds to find homes. It is estimated that there is a current average of 3 million "Pit Bulls" living in the United States and only 1 in 600 will successfully find a "forever" home. Sadly, for every 1 "Pit Bull" placed in a loving home there are 599 killed. Shockingly, that statistic unfortunately does not exclude puppies!

There are between 4,000 and 6,000 animal shelters in the United States. The number of cats and dogs entering those shelters each year is roughly 6-8 million! However, only 30% of the dogs and 2%-5% of the cats are actually reclaimed by their owners. This means the total number of cats and dogs euthanized by shelters annually is 3-4 million! It is estimated that 1 million of those dogs are "Pit Bulls".

The Animal Welfare Society of Southeastern Michigan would like to help! We are offering to have your Pit Bull spayed or neutered at no cost to you! If you are an individual (sorry no rescues) experiencing financial difficulties and need help fixing your Pit Bull, please contact us at animalwelfaresociety@yahoo.com with information about your dog(s), your name, address and phone number. We will then refer you to one of our participating vets and arrange for your Pit Bull to be spayed or neutered at no cost to you. Dogs can be fixed at 4 months of age and older. Having your dog spayed or neutered is quite beneficial to his or her health and well being. In addition to preventing the birth of unwanted animals, spaying and neutering will help your pets live longer, healthier lives. There are many health benefits associated with these surgeries. Males, after neutering, have a reduction in the size of the prostate gland, which greatly decreases their risk of bacterial infections and prostate cancer. Spaying female dogs eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of mammary cancer. Altering your pet will make him or her a better, more affectionate companion. Altered pets are not as likely to roam or get into fights. Also aggressive tendencies can be curbed by having your pet altered. The surgery does not make the animal any less protective, however, nor does it affect the personality of your pet. Dogs have natural instincts to protect their homes and families. In fact, your neutered dog may be an even better protector after surgery, because he will not be distracted and tempted to run off, but will be happy to stay at home with you. Not to mention you will be part of a solution to end the senseless killing of these wonderful dogs.

Please note: We will offer the same program to non Pit Bull owners at a later date.
