Just to add to the sentence I posted about Adonis. Adonis came into my life 14 months ago. My son and I drove down to Clinton to check out Arda's dobies. We already had 3 other pet members of our family-all had been unwanted. Our first is a black and white house cat named Oreo we found at the Humane Society. Our second is a mixed breed dog who was scheduled to be euthanized. Her name is Cocoa. Our third was an all white cat with one blue eye and one green eye who had been left behind when the family moved and he evidently was not part of their moving plans. He was so emaciated that he was losing hair. We named him Snowball. And our fourth family member and most challenging is Adonis. Adonis was an 11 month old black male dobe I fell in love with at Second Chance Dobes. He truly has come a long way in the 14 months that he has been part of our family.
Nothing has been easy with him. He is very intelligent, and head strong. Housebreaking him almost broke me. It took 2 months, even with crate training. My Cocoa had a fit when I brought Adonis home, she promptly cornered him and had him cowering. Snowball hid in the basement for most of an entire month.
Adonis will chew on anything-my son's eye glasses, clothes, ink pens, you name it.

Adopting an unwanted pet is not easy, especially the purebreeds. Many have a lot of issues that got them into a shelter in the first place. But as hard as it may be, the rewards are so worth the effort. In the next year or so I am planning on moving to a larger house and that time, God willing Arda is still doing what she is doing, I will gladly adopt another dobe.

Their intelligence, loyalty, gentleness, and personality brings joy to so many.
Again, I am so glad that Adonis, and all my pets are with me. I must add that all my pets are neutered or spayed, and all are house pets. They have given me and my son a lot of love over the years-unconditional love, they forgive us our faults and love us in spite of them.

Thanks to Sherri and Arda. Mary
Arda
Mary; Thanks so much for this tribute to Adonis. Every once in a while we need to know that what we are doing is to the glory of God. We are all killing ourselves for these dogs and it feels so good to know there is a reason for it all in the end. Thank you for making my day. ARDA

Sherri, Arda, Mary,

SND should be able to help Adonis. I'm sorry that this has happened, but hopefully we can get him the care he needs and he will make a full recovery.

Please email me (sheilla@doberman911.org), and/or Steve (steve@doberman911.org) with Mary's contact info, and let me know when Adonis see's Dr. Karen. Also, I'll need Dr. Karen's phone # again, I've misplaced it. I'll get the case presented right away so that we can get this beautiful boy the help he needs!

Please Pray for Adonis. As you know he is in bad shape at
Dr. Karen. He is getting the best care he has a family that loves

I was at Dr. Karens yesterday morning(Wednesday) and asked the tech's how he was doing since he was laying in his cage with his head held so high. They said he was doing so much better. He looked like he was doing pretty good considering he was probably missing his family. If the roads wouldn't have been so bad and the fact I had four dogs with me I would have tried to see him a little longer.
Mary, if you need me to do anything down here for him please don't hesitate to ask. Even if it's just going and visiting with him (and posting an updated photo). I'm sure you are missing him. I only work about 15 minutes from Allen animal hospital and will be more than happy do whatever you need to make you more comfortable.

Arda
Mary; I am waiting for an update from r Karen as she was going in today to give him another transfusion. Don't panic yet. We are all working hard to see he gets everything he needs. Dr Karen needs to ask the kind of guestions she does because she is a vet and that is the way they are trained. "Cover your ass" approach. We talked last night and we are trying to find a foster home for him to recuperate. We ruled me out as he could certainly catch something from my place with as many dogs as is here. Just hang in there. We are all working on this. Arda

God Has too many wonderful Dobes In the pass few month.
He don't need Adonis..

Please keep praying and we will get through this

Remember us-in August my baby boy's picture was posted. His name is Adonis. He is the most beautiful, loving dobe you ever saw. I adopted him from Arda March of 2003. I was his 4th home and I was hoping his last. We need help. Last night I rushed my baby boy to Michigan State for blood transfusions. He had low red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. He almost died. We don't know why, yet. Just for the emergency service, and transfusions the bill came to almost a thousand dollars. I had to pay up front. It was all I could afford. I could not afford a bone marrow aspirate, abdominal ultrasound, tick titers, and other diagnostic work up to find out what caused such a devastating result to Adonis' immune system. Let me print what the vet at MSU put in my discharge notes. "It is very important to realize that this course of treatment(2 antibiotics, and prednisone) in the absence of a diagnosis can be detrimental to Adonis' overall well being. Ideally, Adonis should have a complete work up:cbc, chem profile, urinalysis, tick titers, chest x rays, abdominal ultrasound, and a bone marrow aspirate and biopsy. Due to financial constraints, this workup was declined. We cannot make an accurate assessment of his prognosis without a diagnosis or appropriate work up. It is very important to understand that Adonis may require multiple blood transfusions while waiting for the meds to be effective, or more importantly, his bone marrow may never recover from the initial insult. Adonis is a beautiful and very sweet dog. We wish him the best of luck." And we were sent out the door. Payments are not allowed. I don't want this boy to die because he was unlucky enough to be adopted by a poor owner. Can anyone help? I would give Adonis up to anyone that could provide the medical care that he needs. I love him so very much, this is breaking my heart. I would do anything for Adonis to have another chance. He is not even 3 years old yet.
Any help would be appreciated. I can make monthly payments if anyone knows a vet that can help. I will give Adonis up if I have to. Thank-you for taking the time to read this. I look forward to any advice that anyone has. Mary Bierlein and Adonis Bierlein

Skitter was there yesterday giving blood for Adonis... It seemed to help a little, according to Dr. Karen. Bella may go tomorrow, Dr. Karen was going to see how he was doing today...

I didn't really get to see him while I was there but we took a wrong turn while heading back to the kennel room and he barked a greeting to Bella!!! and he was laying with his head up high!!!

We are keeping the prayers and white light for the brave boy!!!

Adonis seemed to like the company this morning but wasn't to keen on having his pic taken. I know I don't want pics taken of me when I'm not feeling good either, so I can't blame him. He was up as soon as he saw the tech and I heading towards him. He is pretty weak but they are doing everything they can for this guy. The first and second pic's he wouldn't look at me, I was just getting ready to turn the camera off when he sat down and looked right at me like he was saying if your gonna do this then get a good one.

I went down and saw my boy for 3 hours today. We just sat and talked a while, then we laid down side by side for a little while longer. I took down his canned food and his treats. He ate 3 med size bags of his treats and I was able to get him to get down almost a full large can of dog food. I had to hand feed him the canned food, pretty messy fingers, but well worth it.
Dr Karen called while I was there and said his hematocrit and protein levels are better, but for the first time some abnormal lymphocytes were noted. The pathologist is looking this over. Very possibly it could be leukemia.
I refuse to believe that this dog is fighting this hard, is being such a good boy to no avail. I went down there to help him feel better, and wouldn't ya know it he made me feel better. We went outside for a little bit so that he could go potty and he loved eating the snow, big bites, not licks.
If this ends up being leukemia, I've already talked to Dr Karen and we will put him down, but I will be there to hold him and let him know that everything is ok and that a lot of people love him. I told him that today and he kind of looked at me like, "of course they love me, who wouldn't".
I consider all of you very special friends not only of Adonis' but of mine. Thank-you so very much for reinforcing to us that there are very good, kind people in the world. Love, Adonis' mom
Sherri
I truly pray that it is not cancer, and I glad you were able to spend some quality time with him..

AT least we will know what our options are and we have done our best for a wonderful boy and friend.. I for one am not giving up hope. We trust Dr. Karen completely and she would not have gone this far if she did not believe he had a good chance.
Daisy
Hi,
If Karen needs any more blood donors for Adonis, we have a girl
maybe she can use. Paris is a big girl, healthy. Im sure she would
be up to helping give him some new blood. We dont live to far from
her office.
Have her let us know.
Saying prayers & thinking good thoughts for him......

I also have a friend with a dog that could donate if we need it... She hasn't been "typed" but Dr. Karen can do that pretty easily...

The usual blood donor guidelines are - Over 1 year old - Under 9 years old - Over 40 lbs - General good health - Universal blood type

They will usually also test dobies for vonWillebrands if doberman...

This might be a dumb question, but what the heck, I’ll ask anyway blush.gif . Does the donor dog have to be the same breed as the one receiving the blood? How much can the donor safely supply?

Eric D biggrin.gif
jmnodwell
Nope, blood type is blood type same as people... NOT A DUMB QUESTION!!! I got asked it when talking to my friends, "but it's a doberman and I have a Malmute"... They want to use "universal" blood type because it can be used with any dog but I can't remember, off the top of my head, how many canine blood types there are.

Skitter donates to a blood bank occasionally and it's about the same as a person, they take a pint and Arda can correct me if I'm wrong but about every 8 weeks...

If your dog is a fidgeter, they will give a mild sedative to get them to lay still sleeping.gif because they take it from the neck sweatingbullets.gif and it takes about 30-45 mintues... When Skitter has donated they put her up on exam table and put the bag on scale on the floor, when it weighs a certain weight, they are done. biggrin.gif

Once you get Skitter to relax in that "dead dog" position she is usually good for the entire procedure laugh.gif Dr. Karen gave her an entire can of ID so I know she was a happy pup!!! w00t.gif

I also have some possible donors if needed. We'll be praying for Adonis.... innocent.gif

On January 8th, my precious boy lost his battle with cancer. Until the day he died we had hoped and prayed that it wasn't cancer and that Adonis would recover, but it wasn't to be. I was able to leave work that day and be with my baby as Dr Karen euthanized him. He died in my arms knowing that he was loved. Thank-you to all the blood donors, and everyone for your kindness and compassion. Adonis' death has been unbelievably hard to accept. We miss him so. I can't believe he will never be waiting for me to come from work again. I know that he is in a better place, but it still hurts not to have him with us. Thank-you Arda for allowing me to know this beautiful boy for the short time that we had.

We are very sorry, that it did turn out to be cancer. But We are Thankful to Special Need Dobes that allowed us the time need to properly diagnose Adonis.
