think we were told Benny is 1 year old ... he's more like 3-5, so we went with 4 years. Also, I ran their HWTs today since they were all scheduled for surgery Monday. Benny's heartworm test came back positive. So I had Dr John listen to his heart. He has a heart murmur, which means the worm burden has already affected his heart.
It would be safest for Benny to have 1 injection now, then repeat the 2 injection series in 1 month from now. If both injections were done now there is a greater chance that too many worms will die and clog his heart or lungs. And since his heart is already compromised that would be very bad

Please add Benny to your prayers.. As always he will be in Gods and Dr. John's Capable hands..
It always breaks my hearts when these dogs have to suffer from heartworm since a simple once a month pill would keep them healthy.

Benny has not had a great hand dealt to him in life.
Not only does poor Benny have heartworm disease, but after being in Animal Control, he was exposed and has now come down with kennel cough. His heartworm treatment must now be delayed until the kennel cough has cleared up.
On the up side Benny does have a future to look forward to. He's now being taken care of and will soon be in a foster home and then a forever home, which he greatly deserves. He's a total sweetheart and is a great patient for us to be working on. Tail always wagging!

Please keep those fingers crossed and the prayers going.
Benny had his second Immiticide injection this afternoon. An hour later the kennel girl came and asked me if he should be laying in his cage whining - which is a very unusual thing for our happy go lucky Benny to do. Benny had a reaction to the medication. His face was starting to show some swelling and he was acting painful. He received injectable medications to reverse the allergic reaction and will be on medication for the next few days until his body has finished processing the medication. This is the same kind of reaction a dog might have to a vaccine or bee sting. Not too serious if treated readily, but poor Benny has been fighting so much already.
He has come home with me for the weekend to ensure he does okay. He is on cage rest so he must stay confined to a crate except short walks outside to potty. Caging a dog so much is probably the hardest part of the heartworm treatment but is also the most crucial. Too much activity can overload the heart and cause problems, even as severe as sudden death.
On a good note, Benny was greeted by a few cats when he came in my front door. He sniffed them a little but mostly ignored them. So he should be okay to live in a house with cats. He also did well with the other dogs. His hackles were up but there was no growling and lots of tail wagging. Just needs a little time to become best buds.

Jen Thank you so much.. I know Benny is getting the best care and he is in Gods capable hands.
And No matter what I know that at least he did not get gassed alone with no one to care about him.
You have my authorization to do what ever is in Benny Best interest.

This really makes me mad, this poor dog has to suffer while the so called owners did this to him. I hope there is a hell, becasue that's where they should go.

Benny is doing wonderful today. Back to his normal perky self. The reaction was to the drug, not the actual worms dying. Just like a vaccine reaction. And it was caught very early. He should do fine now.
I feel like a terrible person though. He has to stay in the crate at all times except potty breaks. Brakes my heart. I can't even let him roam indoors because there is too much to get excited about, like kitties and bunnies and guinea piggers. And he'd like to play with the other dogs but isn't allowed. Poor guy.

Jen, I would also like to add my thanks to you for taking him home for the weekend. That way he wasn't alone like he would have been at the vets. Even though he was crated, at least he was in a home environment with people.

Benny is doing well. Doug found him Sunday the same day he went missing. Doug is also interested in adoption of Benny.. So if all goes well, Benny might have hunted down his own forever home.

Great news about Benny. Sherri called and gve me the good news, but I wasn't able to post till today. Proves again what I've been saying, "Things happen cause they were meant to". We were all worried sick when Benny was missing. I agree with Sherri, it would almost have been better to find his dead body, than to not know anything. Knowing they are dead, as painful as that would have been, would at least have been closure. Otherwise our minds are free to imagine the worst things possible.
As bad as it was though that he was missing, if he hadn't gotten away he wouldn't have been able to hunt down his forever home. I hope this adoption goes thrtough. He sounds like a caring man cause he was so nice to take Benny in instead of just let him run on by.

Hello!
I sent in an application for Benny yesterday, but more importantly, I want to know how he is doing? Is he done with the heartworm treatments and were they successful?
Looking forward to hearing good news!!

That is great news!

I am very interested in meeting him - he seems like a lovely boy who has been dealt a horrible start to life.

I know I'm supposed to wait a week to hear from anyone, so I look forward to hearing from someone about him!
