Well, my break from rescueing cats didn't even last 4 days!
Yesterday morning a skinny, half frozen young cat showed up at my grandma's house, climbing her doors to get into the nice and warm house. Grandma's cat would not tolerate another cat in her house, and the family Christmas party was that day. So we took a dog crate over and set the cat up on the enclosed porch with some fluffy blankets to cuddle in and some yummy canned food. The poor girl was starving! And dying of thirst. It seemed like every time we checked on her she had drank all her water.
My grandma lives on a dead end road in the country and we suspect this cat was dropped off by a creul caretaker. The tough times with the economy are making this a larger problem by the day it seems. I just wish the person would have had the decency to take her to a shelter instead of dropping her out in the freezing cold to die.
So she went home with me for the night and is now at work. Warm and content. She tested negative for feline leukemia and AIDS viruses. She is being treated for internal parasites and frostbite on her ears. The frostbite will probably cause the edges of her ears to never re-grow fur.
Candi Cane was named for her sweet personality, since Candy Canes are one of my favorite sweet Christmas treats. Candi is full of love to give to that special family that will promise to keep her warm and fed for life!
Unfortunately, because of an eye infection, the parasites, and frostbite, I can't allow Candi to go to a new home before Christmas. But hopefully she will get to start her new life early in 2009!
