Dia Nox

A mother, a stray, so happy with so much love to give.

Possibly a two year old Australian Kelpie (or mix.)

I had considered adopting her, but decided against it since I couldn't be certain on how she is with other dogs (and i know in my heart that i NEED one that loves other dogs.) Even so, i put my name on the list. I got in touch with a rescue group and they were going to find a home for her.

Well, Dia never had the chance to find her forever home. Someone with a heart of stone took her life. She had only been in the pound six days. (A formal complaint has been filed and corrective actions will take place. There were multiple procedure violations.) No attempt had been made to contact me. Nothing was marked on her chart.

Dia I will always love you. Your soft fur, warm smile, your squishy hugs, and silly belly flops. Your insatiable curiosity, your loyalty, your eagerness to please, and your intelligence. You had oh so much love to give.

(Sorry about those last two pictures. They were taken as profile shots for the rescue to confirm her breed.)

I will eventually get to the point... bear with me.

I've been coming down with a cold and have been really tired. I had already slept eight hours but i decided to go back to sleep and try and fight off the cold some more, or in the least lay there and stretch my muscles... non-committal to falling asleep... but it would be great if i did... i felt like dreaming more...

More background: four days ago i walked one Staffy at the pound and two days ago i walked another one. (As well as various other dogs, but that's unimportant to this tale.)

Well, after i went back to sleep it sort of picked up where some other dream had left off. In the background was this field/woods/swamp. Well, now in this dream i was going downstairs into the subway/basement level of a mall. I had planned on going shopping(?) but there was this "pitty" attacking people and no one was doing anything to stop it. They were all just panicking. So i go up and i choke it to get it off of this guy. I plan on being the one to kill it with my bare hands, and i'm pinning it to the cement with my knee on its ribs. I can feel it's life slipping away but i also see it give up. I see the defeat in its eyes and i just can't go through with it. I ease up my hold and let it go. It gets up and looks as if it is going to attack me, but i glare at it and it tries to run off. I can see now that it'll be in danger and that people have worked up their nerve. Now the dog is a bit more yellow and dingoish. I know that AC has been called. I run over, scoop up the dog and carry it upstairs. I know there is no where else to go, i know it won't have a chance in the woods against the wolves, but it certainly wouldn't have stood a chance against the humans. I try to get it to run off, but the weeds are thick. I keep looking back at the subway stairs/doors. He, now she has moved down the slope and i now see the the weeds are in a marsh. She's getting a drink. Ewwwwe, who knows what';s in there?! ...Oh well, as i'm about to stop her i wonder how long it has been since she's had anything to drink. By this time she's a tri-colored dog, mostly black, with a sometimes curly tail, and pointy ears ;-) in the dream i know the dog is familiar, but i don't know why. I decided i have to get her out of there. (I can't remember how it happened.) I'm back at S.O.'s and my house (It's our house in the dream, but in reality it was the house where i grew up.) By this time I've figured out the dog's real name (I can't for the life of me remember it after i woke up, but i know Dia would have loved it. Sasha is a good runner up.) There are helicopters in the sky searching for something. The dog is using the yard to potty and i'm trying to get her to hurry up. The helicopters are getting closer and i'm getting more panicky. (They're not searching for her, i just have a phobia of helicopters.) She's still using the yard. I am telling S.o. to hurry up and go look out front (as the helicopters are now above and will be on that side.) He gets out of the bathroom, but goes to the kitchen to get himself a drink. I'm urging him to hurry up, but i go to check on the dog. As i reach the back room that leads to the yard the sky changes color it seems and things have a blue-green tint. I'm confused as all heck because i thought it had just been light outside and it's pitch black except for the colored light but i go outside. There's a large flash of light and it's making sound. The dog is afraid and about to panic, but i call her to me and i pick her up in my arms. I finally realize what the beautiful light is that is now covering the east by south east sky and making the whooshing sound... it is the Aurora Borealis!!! It had gone from the turquoise wash out to like a gold lightning that raced across the eastern sky into the north, than shot back and started doing "normal" colors. It was awesome just standing there watching it with her in my arms. (after i had calmed down she calmed down.) We just sat there and watched it together. (After being in a state of anxiety my whole dream i was now feeling quite content. I could have stayed like that for another half hour.) It was in those final moments of the dream that my conscious let me know that it was Dia. (Well, actually whatever name i was calling her in the dream... which i'd change it to... but since i don't know it, it'll remain Dia.)

I almost feel like it was her way of saying farewell and giving me a special moment to remember her by. Like she wanted me to remember her whenever i see the Northern Lights. [( Tidbit: Among mushers the legend goes that sled dogs go to the Northern Lights. ...It's their version of "Rainbow Bridge." I've discovered this while doing the Koli rescue thing.) Dia may have been a herder, not a sledder but eh. *shrug*] :,-)

I have missed them and have been wanting to see them. It could either just be a manifestation of my desires and fears, or it could have been something ...else. Either way, it certainly was special.

-----

My intention had been to just post about the dream, but then something happened just as i was writing a significant thank you letter to a friend. (It'll be easier just for me to paste from the email... so my apologies for the lack of professionalism it may show...)

More background: For those that don't know lightning during snowstorms is probably my most favorite natural phenomenon. (Norther Lights being a close second.)

" OMG that was incredible!!!! All of a sudden it got bright outside, like a powering up. I got up to check it out, thinking it was like a floodlight or something. I had time to watch it get bright... look around and see that it was bright in all directions, and get out of my chair before it turned off. Then a bit of ...silence... then KAfreakengrowlyBOOM! It was lightening!!! There had been no flickering. It was as bright as a summer day outside. The light lasted for a good 10 seconds at least! ...And it's snowing!!! :-D "
