CANADA: No problems, but town bans dangerous dogs
MOOSOMIN, Saskatchewan, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Although there have been no dog problems reported, a small Canadian town has banned several types of dogs it deems dangerous.
The Saskatchewan town of Moosomin passed a bylaw banning Rottweilers, Dobermans and pit bull terriers, breeds most often reported to be involved in attacks on people.
The bylaw took some Moosomin residents by surprise, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
Veterinarian Angela Damant says she was never consulted and didn't know of any problems with the dogs.
She says she's also not sure why town officials decided to go ahead with the bylaw as quickly as they did.
"I haven't heard of an incident of dog bites," she said.
A spokesman for the provincial Humane Society in Regina said a bad dog usually indicates a bad owner, so a ban on certain breeds will be ineffective.
Meanwhile in Moosomin, anyone who already owns one of the banned breeds will be allowed to keep them. But from now on, no one else in the town will be able to acquire them.
