Why do you do what you do?
Why do you put yourself
through the pain?
Why do you choose
for your heart to be broken?
When will you learn?

People often ask how...
How can you watch them suffer?
How can you hear their stories?
Doesn't it make you mad?
How can you look in their eyes?
How can you watch as another one
Passes on, leaving this world
Why do you are so much?
When will you learn?

I have but one answer...
Every time I look in their eyes
Every time I am gifted with a kiss
Or the warmth of a gentle purr
Every time they look back at me
With a glimmer of hope...
Even if only for the briefest moment
I know that my presence has made a difference,
If only for them
And I know that now I've learned
What life and love are truly all about
