Meet Chucky.. He is about 1 1/2 to 2 years young and 10.4 lbs. poodle. He would love a home with an owner that has lots of time to spend with him.. He gets along both with cats and other dogs..
Sherri
We have discovered that Chucky has Luxating Patella
on both knees and will require Surgry. Our wonderful vets At Bay Valley Animal Hospital has greatly discounted the surgry to $800. And we have decided to do the surgry..

kaniments

crow_noir
Wow. It's still hard to believe that is the same dog in the second set of pictures. Amazing.

Glad to hear that so far things went well with surgery.
kaniments

chucky is a fighter. good for him. am very glad that surgery went well. waiting for the next step forward.
Kritter
Chucky's patellar luxation repair surgery went very well today. So far, everything looks to be a success.

We started by xraying Chucky's hips to make sure the knee problems were not a result of hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is not commonly a problem in 10 pound dogs like Chucky, but we wanted to make sure.

Next Chucky was started on IV fluids and anesthatized.
[attachmentid=4232]

Then his legs were shaved and prepped to be sterile for surgery.
[attachmentid=4233]

First, the doctor must disect through muscles to find the actual bones of the knee.
[attachmentid=4234]

[attachmentid=4235]

Next, the doctor must displace the knee cap (patella) to the side and disect out the cartilage that cushions the groove where the knee cap sits.
[attachmentid=4236]

[attachmentid=4237]

[attachmentid=4238]

[attachmentid=4239]

The groove where the knee cap sits is then deepened using a bone chisel and ronguers. This makes it much harder for luxation to occur.
[attachmentid=4240]

[attachmentid=4241]

[attachmentid=4242]

The ligament that holds the patella in place is sutured to secure the knee cap from moving also. This is called lateral imbrication.
[attachmentid=4243]

[attachmentid=4244]

At the end of the procedue each separate tissue is reconnected using sutures. In approximately 10 to 14 days all the incisions will be healed and the skin sutures will be removed.

After the 1 1/2 hour surgery, Chucky also had his teeth cleaned and polished quickly. During recovery, Chucky was placed on a morphine drip to keep him comfortable through the night and had a pedicure and some ear care. Chucky made a quick recovery from the anesthesia and was resting comfortable. (Sorry, I forgot to get pictures of the last portion of the surgery.)

I'm so glad his surgery went well too! Thank you to all of the clinic for the amazing and wonderful skills you contribute. Chuck's got angels surrounding him there.
Kathie
So glad Chucky came through the surgery. Looking forward to hearing about him running and jumping like a young dog should. I will be sending a check tomorrow to help out. I can't use a credit card right now because our number was stolen and we are waiting for the new one to arrive. What a hassle that is.
Sherri
Thank you Jen for the blow by blow, Even though I have seen s/n surgeries I never saw this type of surgery before and to think Chucky will have better Knees then ME....

I was gonna visit today but I felt Chucky would be more relaxed and not as hyper by not seeing me.. I will come by Saturday at the latest am doing an adoption for Mandy

Hello Sherri and Group
Sorry I haven't been keeping up to date with pics of my Boo (adopted Feb '05). Just received a message about Chucky, but for some reason couldn't get through, so did some round about searching and found you. He is a darling..Kaniments...good luck in the adoption process, do hope you can get Chucky, if he is even half as sweet as my Boo you'll love him to pieces.
Reading these posts and seeing the dr. actually working on the little guy just warms my heart and I'll be sending a donation to the vets.
I'm sending a couple of pics of Boo....doesn't he look like he could be Chucky's older brother?

Marlene
Sherri
Thank you so very much Marlene Boo does look alot like Chucky to see boo New Start Click here.

It is so good to hear from former adopters and know that things are going well. It truly gives us the strength to keep going..

I went to visit Chucky yesterday after work with plans on taking him home But decided he need one more night with the moriphine drip. He seemed to be in quite a lot of pain.. But We have great hope that after he recovers the pain will be a thing of the past and he will be able to begin his new life as a much loved pet Just like Boo..

On the way out of the vet's I was cheered up quite a bit by seeing another former foster Vera...... She looked so proud and happy to be with her owner Marge Vera tan has lightened and she looked a bit chubby from Daddy giving her a little too much spoiling.. To See Vera new Start click here

Well, I waiting am getting ready to meet potential new adopters for Mandy and then will bring Chucky home to recover. But Thank You so much Marlene The updates is what keeps me going and even on my worst days can make me smile.

kaniments

Wow, Boo looks exactly like Chucky. I am hoping that when Sherri goes to see Chucky he will be ready to go home and make a complete recovery. Thanks for wishing me the best with his adoption. Chucky stole my heart when i saw him online the very first time.
lorienllc
Bo sure does look like he could be Chucky's big brother! How wonderful to see him happy, cared for and loved. And...so very stylin in his hunter safe, warm coat! Thanks for sharing and the updates on such a good boy! smile.gif
Sherri
Chucky has walked a little today and is finally resting. He is pretty grumpy and still dealing with the pain from the surgry.

kaniments

He looks very cute asleep. Hopefully his pain will go away soon. He is a tough little boy and will pull through. We are all praying for his quick recovery.

Chucky does look hilarious tongue.gif It looks like he got a really backfired poodle cut. It's really neat to save pictures of the long journey this little boy has gone through.
Kathie
Poor baby. Do you think he knows how silly he looks (don't tell him) How is he feeling now? Is he eating yet?
Sherri
Thank you Marlene Ackling for your generous donation.

crow_noir
I know it's $1 to vote on a photo, but does it cost anything to submit a photo? I thought I seen somewhere that it does, but now i can't find it anywhere.
Sherri
Nope submission are free..

Sherri
Thank You Chris Morris and Jennifer Donze for your wonderful donation for Chuck
kaniments
how is chucky doing? is he in less pain and more playful yet? rolleyes.gif
Sherri
Chucky is getting his stitches out today.. He is not as playful as he use to be.. and still experience some pain. I really feel he worries about being hurt by the other dogs.

I will know more after the vet visit.. He must be carried up stairs and he is not allowed to jump up and down from furniture.
