Meet Chucky.. He is about 1 1/2 to 2 years young and 10.4 lbs. poodle. He would love a home with an owner that has lots of time to spend with him.. He gets along both with cats and other dogs..

We have discovered that Chucky has
Luxating Patella on both knees and will require Surgry. Our wonderful vets At Bay Valley Animal Hospital has greatly discounted the surgry to $800. And we have decided to do the surgry..

Chucky's patellar luxation repair surgery went very well today. So far, everything looks to be a success.
We started by xraying Chucky's hips to make sure the knee problems were not a result of hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is not commonly a problem in 10 pound dogs like Chucky, but we wanted to make sure.
Next Chucky was started on IV fluids and anesthatized.
[attachmentid=4232]
Then his legs were shaved and prepped to be sterile for surgery.
[attachmentid=4233]
First, the doctor must disect through muscles to find the actual bones of the knee.
[attachmentid=4234]
[attachmentid=4235]
Next, the doctor must displace the knee cap (patella) to the side and disect out the cartilage that cushions the groove where the knee cap sits.
[attachmentid=4236]
[attachmentid=4237]
[attachmentid=4238]
[attachmentid=4239]
The groove where the knee cap sits is then deepened using a bone chisel and ronguers. This makes it much harder for luxation to occur.
[attachmentid=4240]
[attachmentid=4241]
[attachmentid=4242]
The ligament that holds the patella in place is sutured to secure the knee cap from moving also. This is called lateral imbrication.
[attachmentid=4243]
[attachmentid=4244]
At the end of the procedue each separate tissue is reconnected using sutures. In approximately 10 to 14 days all the incisions will be healed and the skin sutures will be removed.
After the 1 1/2 hour surgery, Chucky also had his teeth cleaned and polished quickly. During recovery, Chucky was placed on a morphine drip to keep him comfortable through the night and had a pedicure and some ear care. Chucky made a quick recovery from the anesthesia and was resting comfortable. (Sorry, I forgot to get pictures of the last portion of the surgery.)

So glad Chucky came through the surgery. Looking forward to hearing about him running and jumping like a young dog should. I will be sending a check tomorrow to help out. I can't use a credit card right now because our number was stolen and we are waiting for the new one to arrive. What a hassle that is.

Hello Sherri and Group
Sorry I haven't been keeping up to date with pics of my Boo (adopted Feb '05). Just received a message about Chucky, but for some reason couldn't get through, so did some round about searching and found you. He is a darling..Kaniments...good luck in the adoption process, do hope you can get Chucky, if he is even half as sweet as my Boo you'll love him to pieces.
Reading these posts and seeing the dr. actually working on the little guy just warms my heart and I'll be sending a donation to the vets.
I'm sending a couple of pics of Boo....doesn't he look like he could be Chucky's older brother?

On the way out of the vet's I was cheered up quite a bit by seeing another former foster Vera...... She looked so proud and happy to be with her owner Marge Vera tan has lightened and she looked a bit chubby from Daddy giving her a little too much spoiling.. To See

how is chucky doing? is he in less pain and more playful yet?
Sherri
Mar 1 2007, 07:50 AM
Chucky is getting his stitches out today.. He is not as playful as he use to be.. and still experience some pain. I really feel he worries about being hurt by the other dogs.
I will know more after the vet visit.. He must be carried up stairs and he is not allowed to jump up and down from furniture.
