Poor Gaberille was born with a congenital birth defect is sometimes referred to as a 'hole in the heart.' In reality, there is no hole in the heart, but rather a hole between the heart chambers. Most commonly, this septal defect occurs between the right and left ventricles hence the name ventricular septal defect septal defect (VSD).
He is expected to live a few short months. Until breeders learn to breed for quality little angels like our Gaberille will pay the price.
Our only hope is that we make what ever life he has filled with love. Please never support backyard breeders.

What a beautiful dog. And there is no hope for him?
Sherri
Feb 9 2007, 09:50 AM
Well not only does Gaberille have the worst hear murmur our vets have ever heard but his heart beat is also irregular.
There is nothing medically that we can do.. But I truly believe where there is life there is hope.. Tis why we named him Gaberille..
He is happy and loved..

Yay for Gaberille! Such a handsome boy.
Is there a chance his body could be repairing itself. How many dogs live with this condition?
Sherri
May 9 2007, 05:46 AM
The Dr.'s don't think so. They think he will just one day not wake up. But they estimated he would not live this long.. Maddie does not stop him from playing hard and fast he eats good quality food and even some extra's and He seems to be living his life to the fullest
Kathie

Gaberille is teaching us to make each day the best it can be. I hope he has many, many more. I prey that somehow he manages to keep going despite his heart murmur. So good that Maddie is giving him such a great life.

Since Flyer was moved from his permanent foster home we have decided to try and find a home for him so Karen can continue to help homeless pets. We have placed him on petfinders as a special need pet and will be praying that he gets a family that appreciates his love for life and unconditional love.

Yay! It was always my hope for him to be listed. I always felt he deserved the same chance as any other pet brought into rescue to find a loving "forever" family... Even if they realized that he could go at any moment.
I always feel weird about posting this stuff, but one story has served me well in knowing it is better in taking the risk of being though weird or crazy. Sometimes i get hunches. (Bear with me, this will eventually get back around to Flyer.) Well, some of our friends were going in to be going into their 30's and were well settled in life. Had one son. I kept seeing a daughter in their lives, but i never told them. They were pretty sure they were only having the one child. Well, when they arrived past their 30's they finally decided to try for a second child, but they didn't tell anyone, afraid of the criticism. Well, i kept getting this message and i finally decided to deliver it when she was several months along and they were starting to tell people. The woman is rather spiritual while the husband is pretty much a skeptical scientific type. I told her that i seen that her baby is a girl and she told me to tell her mom that everything is going to turn out OK. The mother burst out crying in tears of joy and hugged me thanking me sooooo much. Turns out there had been tons of complications in the pregnancy and the doctors weren't even sure if the baby would survive, let along turn out to be a healthy child. The mother didn't really have anyone to turn to to vent and talk to and anyone she had was so pessimistic. I was the pillar she needed and i didn't even know it. Mind you, we're lucky if we see these friends three times a year. There was no way i could have picked up on there being complications... we hadn't seen them for months and we have no mutual friends. They indeed did have a girl and she's two years old and is one of the happiest healthiest babies you could ask for.
So anyhow... Ever since he was first posted I kept seeing that Gaberille would at least live to his 6th Birthday (give or take since there are so many varying factors with his care and the types of energies that he can be surrounded with. Prayers certainly never hurt ;-) ) That's why i was so confused that he supposedly had only been given months to live and i was asking all the questions about the condition.
Just HOW limited does his activities have to be? From the pictures i see that he's allowed to play with other dogs.
Sherri
Jan 12 2008, 05:55 PM
oh he can play all right.. We decided from the start to let him be as much of a dog as his health allowed. But if he starts acting winded.. we stop him from playing and make him take a little break.. He needs coaxing to eat
crow_noir
Jan 12 2008, 11:23 PM
Oh, well that isn't too bad then as far as the activity goes. So i guess that means he can go for walks and stuff then.
:-( That bites that he still doesn't have an appetite.

Flyer had a wonderful sponsor that is paying for MSU dept of cardiology. we can have flyer evaluated with a complete physical exam and echocardiogram, which will give you an excellent idea of exactly what his physical cardiac condition is...
Thank you so much Katherine..

The Dr.'s confirmed what our vet said all along, Flyer suffers from PDA. Surgry is his only hope. When he was a puppy it was decided that since he was not in pain we would let him have what ever life and time the lord saw fit and we put it in God's capable hands. I said I had to use my brain and not my heart and put the needs of the many animals in our care and future animals first.
But our sweet boy has such a will to live.. Katherine providing the testing.. our volunteer battling the snow storm to get him to his appointment.. Flyer asks for nothing, he see's his cup as 1/2 full, he shows us each and every day It is good to be alive. He also provides education to show people who suffers when back yard breeders breed for profit.
As long as he is such a fighter and inspiration.. How can we Do NOTHING. I prayed last night for the Lord to show me a way.
I would have to be blind not to see He has been. by providing Angels to help Flyer aka Gaberilla all along. From his possible adopter, to Katherine, to his foster homes.
We WILL be checking into the cost, and if we can get discounts from MSU also There might be a vet in Owosso Dr. Cook that could do the surgry cheaper.
We do realize his best chances would have been to have the surgry when he was yet still a pup. But The Dr.'s feel he could live a normal life still with the surgry. We just have to try Maybe we are all just crazy... Crazy in love with Flyer.
There is not a person that has met him that did not love him. Please add Flyer to your prayers and we will keep you updated as soon as we know more..
Thank you again Katherine for being an Angel for Flyer!!!

Sheri, could you post anything more to make me fall even more in love with Flyer?!
From Willow's thread: "Ohhh and I forgot Uncle Flyer counts the pups and makes sure the get kisses daily."
S.O. is trying to sleep and when i read that i let our a very audible "Awwwwe!" and nearly became tearful.
He is such a special boy.
-----
Wow, very shaved "puppy." Poor boy. That cut looks HUGE. ...How's he staying warm in these cold temps? Does he need a coat? We still have King's. (and i know dog coats for large dogs are hard to come by. Especially water repellent ones that are lined.)

Sherri,
This is Susan A. with GSD Sarah--remember me from last year? Any word on whether the MSU student you mentioned is actually going to adopt Flyer?
The illness my roommate/sister had, if you remember, was much worse than we ever imagined, she had surgery for cancer and I have been her caregiver this past year. She is now done with radiation therapy, is on the road to recovery, and we are considering another dog again as she gets stronger.
I don't have your email address any more--please email me at JWsusanA@aol.com.
Thanks!

Sherri,
Please see the application I filled out. As I noted on it, there is one thing--my sister's health problems. We went to an appointment with the oncologist today, and it is uncertain news. Results from bloodwork could mean nothing, or could mean another round of fighting the cancer she has been fighting for the past year and a half. We won't know for another 6-8 weeks.
This means I cannot, in all fairness to her and to Flyer, consider taking him right now. Caring for Sarah (my GSD) during the past year and keeping her happy while being a caregiver for my sister (and still trying to work almost full time) was nearly too much. Sarah, with such a good, stable temperament, came through it with flying colors. I couldn't ask that, however, of a dog whose life has been so uncertain already.
We really felt an affinity for him, the way he, too, came through such a life-threatening situation. But I am afraid maybe we couldn't devote the time and attention to him that he will need, if my sister's health outlook takes a turn for the worse.
I really hope and look for him to find his perfect home--wish it could be here!

Dear Karen,
I read about Gaberille for the first time today, Aug 2nd. He was a beautiful boy and looked so happy in his pictures. You obviously gave him the love that he needed and deserved.
I don't doubt that he is looking down on you right now from a very special place and thanking you for your faith in believing that he could be the odds. It was truly a miracle that he was able to live into adulthood. I believe that the animals who touch our lives, if only for a short time, will one day see us again and they will be healthy and full of life.
I know that Gabrielle will always hold a special place in your heart. It seems that the ones who are here for only a short time make the greatest imprint on our heart.
You were certainly his guardian angel and that is something that one of God's creatures will never forget.
