Sweet Murphy just went to his forever home today. He now lives in Port Huron with Jennifer and Ben. He was so lucky he also got a sister Boo, who looks jusst like him!! They brought Boo to my house to see how the two would be together, and it was love at first sight. Jenny and Ben liked him right away too.

Murphy had been abused before he came to me, and is still a little shy with new people, so I delivered him to his new home to make his adjustment a little easier. He remembered them and Boo, so he settled down pretty soon after arriving. I really enjoyed watching both dogs running around the yard together. They were both so bouncy, happy, and excited, I felt all warm and fuzzy inside and even got a lump in my throat.

Poor Murphy has been at my house a whole year! When he first came here he was afraid of everything and everybody, including me. It took a long time, but he finally started coming out of his shell. Then when I started training him, I discovered a VERY intelligent dog. One who loved to please, totally enjoyed learning new stuff, had a big heart with lots of love to give, and loyalty. He has been posted on our site for months, but there weren't many applications filled out for him, or offers just fell through for one reason or another. I just kept telling him "That's ok Murphy, somewhere out there are the perfect people who are meant to have you, they just don't know it yet. When they see you, they will know that you were meant for them and then you'll be home." And viola, along came Jennifer and Ben!!!! hug.gif

So, even though I miss him terribly already, I am also jumping for joy cause Murphy is finally home. Jenny and Ben promised they would send pictures of both thier fur-kids so we can see how happy everyone is. We never get tired of updates so keep them coming.

Thank you again Jennifer and Ben, for looking to a rescue group for both your kids. You saved two lives, and you will be rewarded with twice the love - from each of them. No, I don't mean that Murphy would have been put down - wash my mouth out with soap for even typing that - but because of adopters like you rescue groups are able to place stray dogs thus saving thier lives.

Hi all,

Murphy is doing well with us in Port huron, but we're struggling a little lately with an issue. Murphy gets very protective of us and our home, and very upset whenever a new person comes over - especially a new man. He snapped at a friend of mine last weekend at the house, and it's made me a bit nervous that Murphy may unwittingly hurt someone who comes over because he is scared and protective of us. Dawn has given us some great suggestions regarding ways to help Murphy cope with new situations, but i'm looking for as much imput as I can get. We really love Murphy and want to work with him to not be so scared of men in the house. Ideas?

Peace,

Jenny[attachmentid=2470]

Hi Jenny Your pictures are wonderful. Welcome to our group and thank you for sharing.

I suggest setting the situation up, to teach Murphy how to handle it appropriately.

Find a friend that Murphy does not react well to. Have Murphy on leash, Have your Male friend come prepared with some very good treats for appropriate behavior I suggest hot dog pieces..

Teach Murphy How to react to new people by having complete control over the situation.. He needs to learn that you are Alpha and will be protecting the pack and he does not need to.

Practice makes perfect. Have the friend knock approach Place Murphy in a firm Sit. As Murphy succeeds have the friend reward him with the hotdog piece. If he acts inappropriately scold firmly, exit the situation (by leaving to a ajoining room) and start again from the beginning. You can practice this with a few different people. Once Murphy feels secure in the situation, I am sure you will see much improvement.

Both Ben and yourself should take the lead and practice with Murphy.
