I will never understand with all the people that love animals and pets how our society can allow something as cruel and INHUMANE as gassing to happen in their own back yard... The solution is simple for the over population spay and neuter and controlled breeding, yet it never ending.. But one step at a time, at least as Americans we should be able to stop the cruelity of GAS shelters. Even the worst criminals are allowed the dignity of injection. They don't have to be put through hell of being gassed. What can we do to stop it?

I believe that Belle the Granny Setter got very lucky when Shiawassee Humane took an interest in her. We got very lucky in contacting Sherri about Belle, who put us in contact with the Shiawassee Humane Society who gave us Belle.
Had she gone to Shiawassee Animal Control in the shape she was in and at her age it would have been death row. Gas is not any way for anything to die in the dark, ill from several varietys of parasites and abandoned. That is what she would have been looking at if The Shiawassee Humane Society and Amanda had not taken an interest in her.
Tonight having had her walk, a good dinner, and play time with Shannon and Annie
(she still plays like a much younger Setter) she is asleep on her couch. Instead of gassed to death !
Those of you in Shiawassee County try raising some hell with the county commission. Talk with the news papers. It worked here, they went from gas to injection. Now all we have to do here is go to no kill.

Mecosta County Animal Control G R - 1/3 of the animals that enter shelter are sold to research
Montcalm County Animal Control G R - over 70% of the animals that enter the shelter are gassed or sold to research

Sherri, I noticed your first post about the counties with gas chambers was in 2005, do you know if any of those counties have quit using them since then? Jackson, has moved to a new facility... thank goodness. Are they still using gas?

I know Muskegon No longer gasses and I trying to verify exactly who is gassing now in 2009.
We come a long ways in making things better. The Tuscola Barrel is a great reminder in how much we have accomplished.. Since this is in my back yard.

Ten of the shelters in Michigan euthanize cats and dogs by gas chamber. Those shelters are in the following counties: Berrien, Branch, Cass, Gratiot, Mecosta, Midland, Shiawassee, St. Joseph, Van Buren and Huron Township in Wayne County.

What I don't understand is:

If EBI is the AVMA's preferred method of Euthanasia, why is the MVMA opposed to this bill?

I don't understand why the vets are not endorsing this bill. The only reason that I can think of is they might think they would loose business to shelters and humane societies if people were not afraid of their animals being gassed.

House Bills 4803 and 4263 faced an impasse because of concerns raised by the Michigan Veterinarian Medical Association and Farm Bureau about making the specific changes in the Dog Law. So Representative Miller and Jones amended their submitted bills by changing the section of law amended, hoping to alleviate many of the concerns raised.
New bills have been introduced by Representative Miller and Representative Jones. The first amends the law dealing with the licensing of animal control shelters and animal protection shelters. It would add a section requiring when a dog or cat is euthanized that it would only by "an injection of a commercially prepared solution as provided in Section 733 of the Public Health Code." Under this section of law, the penalties for violating the requirement could be suspension or loss of license or a fine up to $1,000.
The second bill would amend the Public Health Code to state that Class B Dealers may only euthanize dogs or cats by the same process, "an injection of a commercially prepared solution as provided in Section 733 of the Public Health Code." Penalties for violating this act are a misdemeanor or a fine up to $500.

But April 7 Commissioners of Midland County voted 6-1 to change the method of euthanasia at Midland Animal Control from the gas chamber to EBI Euthansia By Injection
