Dusk, now renamed Seth is doing great! He and his big sisters are getting along better each day and our teenage son has shown him off to all the nieghbors! Everyone just loves him!! He is doing great at housetraining, only one accident! He knows "come" and "sit", too! It's been alittle hard to keep up with big sisters on our walks but, he's trying! We have a great picture that we took on Seth's first day with us and we'll try to figure out how to post it soon. Seth is definately a very special puppy and we really feel he is going to grow into an extraordinary dog!!

Added some more pics. at:
http://community.webshots.com/user/keporter48184 that I took today 10-6-03. I have to work on the cutting and cropping to make them load up on this site. Seth's ears are standing straight up most of the time. He has taken a trip to Maryland and Pennslyvania so far. He is terrified of heights, I have to pic him up to put him in and out of the truck. We have just got him to start going up and down stairs. Seth loves to play, he loves kids and every dog and cat he meets. He is a great addition to the family.

Seth gets to go to the vet this week to get his last checkup of the year. I'm sure he can't wait as everyone there loves him and his ears. He weighs about 35Lbs now. His ears are definatly way too big for his head and body. He gets along so well with the other dogs he meets and he loves cats ( they just don't like him). Will post as often as I can.

Seth found a new friend over Thanksgiving in Pennsylvania. My wife's aunt has a Doberman and Seth and him(Amos) had a blast. They had big fields to just run and chase each other in. When it was time to go to bed Thursday night, Seth passed out. He loves every dog and human he meets.

Hi, It's me Seth. I thought I would help out and post for my mom and dad. They have been kinda busy lately. My dad now goes away in the mornings before I wake up ( mom says he works days now, whatever that means) and some days he leaves at night (mom says he has school). I guess it's okay because mom is always at home and we still get to go for walks. I really miss giving dad a big sloppy kiss in the mornings to wake him up though. I just had a month birthday, I turned 8 months old on Saturday and dad measured me at 26 1\2 inches tall. I think I'm getting big. My mom has taught me another new trick and it's fun because I get a TREAT if I do it. She tells me to "pick up" and I just have to pick up whatever she is pointing at and put it in her hand. I have also learned to caught a tennis ball in my mouth. I have to just play caught with the balls though because Shelby (my sister) is always faster when my mom throws them for us. My mom says that Shelby is addicted to the tennis balls. All I know is she does not like to share them with me or any one else. My sister Bridgette is pretty cool for a little dog. She likes to walk underneath me instead of around me. She plays with me sometimes but, mom is alway telling me to be easy with her. My cat Abbey is the best. She likes to run and let me chase her. Mom tell me to leave her be but, I love her. I can't help it if I get a little drool on her. I love my forever home and my whole big family and friends. Thanks for saving my doggy mom, my doggy brothers and sisters and me. I hope my mom and dad can take me to visit you all again some day soon. My mom says you will be impressed with me, whatever that means. Well, I better go before my dad gets home because, I need to rest before our walk. And it's time to feed Abbey. I love to stare at her while she eats. Abbey IS NOT impressed with me! Take care!
Love,
Seth

Hello all,
We took Seth and his sisters to the vet today. Seth weighed in at an astounding 98Lbs. The vet said he'll probably gain a few more pounds before he stops growing. What a horse this guy is. He cried and whined the whole time at the office. He's such a big baby. He loves going for rides in the truck and walks. He has learned to open things like his crate,(Yes when he opens it he lies down.). He also will pickup just about anything you drop if you ask him to. He'll give it to you if you ask (except food). We are taking Seth to PA this weekend so he can play with his Dobe friend Amos. I'll post some pics when we get back.

Wow! I think it's safe to say Seth has finally grown into his ears! He has got to be one of the prettiest, oops, handsomest, dogs I have ever seen. His coat looks so luxurious too. What are you feeding him? We can see he is obviously well loved, so he probably gets his breakfast from a skillet on Sunday mornings! LOL!

A friend of mine, who is looking to adopt a dog, sent me a link to the happy ending stories and told me about Seth. Last July, we adopted the dog who was turned in with EZ Lady (Seth's mom). His name is Kelso and prior to being neutered, he is believed to have fathered EZ Ladies pups. Seth is quite a beautiful animal! If he is as smart as Kelso, he is well on his way to being a wonderful, loving companion. I don't know how many pups there were, but, I am sure they are all adorable.
If you have high speed Internet and are curious to see what Kelso looks like, you can check him out here:
http://vidcom.org/clips/AVisitWithKelso.asfThe video is from December 2003 and it shows him being the character he is!
Anyway, keep posting the updates and best of luck with your family of shepherds!

HI! It is me Seth, again! I just wanted to announce that I have a new sister! Her name is Avery and she is a 7 week old gray fluffy kitten! She is so tiny at 1 pound and 2 ounces. I love her and she seems to really like me too! My other kitty sister Abbey isn't real happy with my mom for bringing Avery home but she will get over it soon! My favorite game to play with Avery is peek-a-boo. Avery is on the seat of the recliner and I stand behind. Then, when I peek around one side of the chair she runs to peek around the other side and so on. Avery came from Pennsylvania where my best friend Amos lives. My mom was worried that I would be to rough with the kitten but, I just like to give her kisses. Mom says that Avery's only worry now is that I might step on her. Dad is trying to get a good picture of Avery to post but, she just won't stay still long enough! I am such a proud BIG brother!! Take Care!!

Seth is doing really well. He behaves alot better than his sisters. He now sleeps out of his crate if "he" wants to. Most of the time he sleeps downstairs because it is cooler there, plus he an keep an eye on his kitten friend. We can't believe how big he has gotten. He has a real dominating bark which is good since I work midnights and hate leaving the family at home. Every once in a while he tests out his bark and growl on me when I'm getting home in the morning and I,m not sure if I want to open the door. I think all he'd do is lick someone to death anyway. Our son didn't shut the gate the other day and he went next door to visit them, he has never went beyond our front yard before so we were surprised he went the other hundred feet to see the. I think he heard them talking on the porch and was having trouble eavesdropping from a distance.

Sorry we haven't replied for a while we have been pretty busy buying a new house. We decided Seth and his sisters need some acerage to run around on. Seth is really a big dog but a wimp toward other dogs. He whines and cries if he sees other dogs and they start barking at him. The picture I have attached is of seth and shelby fighting for space on the loveseat.

Hello all,
Seth had his vet appointment the other day and weighed in at 117Lbs. The vet told us he looked good, as in not overweight. He is enjoying the new yard, he is superfast for his size. I race him often and haven't won.(he even gives me a pretty big head start.) The only problem we have with him is he is protective and aggressive over his food. We have been working on this for a few months. The vet told us another way to try so I guess we'll give it a shot.
We will post back later. The Porter's

Food or resource guarding
Step One is to do away with his food bowl for a week or two. Shep will be dining out of your hand, a few kibbles at a time.
Step Two is to bring back the food bowl. It should remain empty until you pass by and drop a few pieces of kibble in it. After those are eaten up, you should drop small handfuls of kibble in at two-minute intervals until the entire meal has been eaten. By now your dog should be practically begging you to approach his bowl.
Step Three is to put a semi-filled bowl on the floor and as you pass by, drop in a few better-than-kibble tidbits. Then add the remaining kibble in your next pass.
Step Four is to put a full food bowl on the floor as your dog holds a sit-stay. Release him with a cheery "okay." Then once or twice a week, call your dog away from his bowl and reward him for coming over to you with a tasty tidbit. Please use your "sit-stay," "wait," and "take it" commands with the dog so it is absolutely clear to Shep who owns the kitchen and the tasty morsels in it.
Each of these steps should be undertaken for 10 to 14 days for both breakfast and dinner. While you are grappling with a food-guarding problem, your dog should wear a leash at mealtimes as a safety measure. Don't use it to correct him unless you are in jeopardy of being hurt. Since food guarding seldom happens in a vacuum and often signals other problems in the dog/owner relationship, a basic obedience course is highly recommended for canines who exhibit this behavior. Finally, if you experience any backsliding, return to Step One. Slow and steady wins this contest of wills.

A good guide to overcoming resource guarding is a book called
Mine! by author Jean Donaldson. It's pretty inexpensive and is a quick read and covers everything that needs to be done to curb the guarding. My Doberman is a resource guarder as well. When we first adopted him, I couldn't touch his rearend without him giving me the eye, and if I didn't back off, he'd snap. I've gotten him to where I can touch him all over his body now and have gone so far as his neck. We're still working on advancing to his chin and head. I can at least stick my hand in his bowl now and can take it away from him if need be without being bitten. He's also much better about my other two dogs approaching him while he eats, although if they advance toward his bowl as if they were going to sneak a bite, he'll snap at them. It used to be that they couldn't even walk by him without him snapping. We're getting there.

HI! It's me Seth. Guess what I have another sister! Her name is Bailey and she is a Chocolate lab mix. She came from PA where my best friend Amos lives. Bailey, her mom, brothers and sisters were thrown out at my aunt's house (Amos' mom). Unfortunetly, my aunt could only get three puppies to come to her, the rest ran into the woods. Bailey was very lucky to be one of the three. Bailey is a fun sister but, my mom says she's a little hyper. It's great here at my new home too! We have a big house and a big yard and barns to explore. We are even closer to Second chance! Thanks for letting my mom and dad adopt me! Well, better go get a little nap time in before Bailey wakes up. I'm going to need it!
Take Care!
