wink.gif Does anyone have any tips on getting neighboring dogs to get along. Were I live the yards are connected by the chain link fence. Now Dakota was housed with lots of dogs. Sam my boxer mix has been the only dog for 5 years or more. He and Dakota had their issues when we first got her now it no one mess with Dakota I think. He acutally nipped the vet when he thought the vet hurt Dakota. My neighbor recently adopted a Sheltie? Smaller version of the Collie. Whenever the dogs are out together they tear at each other through the fence. I'm kind of at a loss on how to get them to get along so we dont constantly have to worry about if their dog is out or them to worry about if ours is out. We both just want them live side be side in peace. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sherri, the important thing, the immediate thing, is to stop giving
these dogs the opportunity to run the fence row together and engage
in the fence fighting.

They are building up the defense drive in both dogs and a head of
steam that is going to increase the likelyhood of generalized dog
aggression if they let it continue.

In addition to building defense drive sky high, the volitility is
also being jacked up....the time it takes a dog to go from calm to
out of control is reduced the more they are exposed to the stimulus
that provokes the reaction. Pretty soon you have a dog that goes
into a blind rage in just a few seconds from which you can not
recall them. And eventually it will be the same with other animals
they come across, not just the dog on the other side of the fence.

These people can get help from Sam Malatesta in understanding what
is happening and how to stop it and perhaps re-introducing the dogs
at a later time if it is important to them to be able to have the
dogs encounter each other in their day to day life and get along,
but there isn't going to be any way around not leaving them out in
the yard on their own, left totally on their own.

They can go sign up at www.talkddogtv.com, log in and go to the Ask
Sam message board. Its free and Sam really does work with people
individually on an ongoing basis to overcome problems if they are
serious about wanting to do things differently.

Hi
We dont give them a chance to run the fence. We stop them right away. I just want them to beable to be outside at the same time without any problems. I will be looking up Sam Malatesta and see what help I can get.

Kelly we also have this problem with some of the dobes in the outside pens at 2nd chance.. We usually do a strong correction voice control and Squirt with the hose.. Many times it is just the fence.. and if you put them in the same pen they are fine.. This sometimes can be a form of play.. also..

Sam is a great trainer.. and might have better suggestions.. Please let us know.. and share any advice he can give.

I went to the site and registerd and posted on it. Dakota was fine till she picked it up from Sam. He is a very protective dog. Both me and my neighbor want the dogs to get a long. I think she is intimidated because Sam is a boxer/pit mix and growls a little warning when they come near the fence. I've give them some strong corrections voice wise and had a short leash on them so I could grab it and correct them. I will try the water with Dakota because she hates it, Sam loves to play in water so that wouldn't work with him. I will post any tips from the other site.
