We are Great Lakes Mastiff Rescue, Inc. Our mission is to take in, alter, vet and place Mastiffs in need. Gus is a special case and needs your help to get a badly needed skin graft to continue the healing of his leg. All donatins can be sent directly to the vet, earmarked for Gus.
This is from his Foster Mom:
Gus came to live with us on August 29, 2004. He was a mess. My husband said you couldn't even tell he was a dog. His fur was so dirty it looked like someone had poured oil on him. His teeth were chocolate brown with large silver scrapes on them from chewing on the chainlink fence that imprisoned him along with another extra large kennel mate. He lived for years in an outdoor kennel on cement with no attention other than a bowl of food slid to him occassionally. He had several huge calouses on every part of his body including the middle of his tail. He was missing several teeth and an had extremely large mass that grew out of the side of his back leg near his ankel. The growth was abou the size of half a baseball and has been there for approximately 2 years. It bothered him so much. He chewed on it everyday and it bled and oozed. Gus was neutered in September at which time a biosy of the growth was done and sent to MSU. Fortunately it was not cancerous and my vet had never seen anything like it before; especially something that had been allowed to grow for so long with no medical attention.
On September 21, my vet surgically removed the growth. It was much bigger than appeared on the surface. It ran laterally in both directions under the skin. They were not able to close the wound with stitches because there was not enough skin to cover it. Gus has gone to the vet every 3 days for 11 weeks now to have the wound cleaned and rebandaged. As they scrub the open sore and place new dressings on it he has never flinched or whined. He has never chewed the bandage or complained. He continues to hobble around as best a 200 lb. dog can with a bum leg. Unfortunately the wound has stopped healing. It has grown about half of the way back, but is not healing anymore.
The vet has decided that Gus needs a skin graft in order to complete the healing process and allow him to finally be healthy again.
Graphic Pictures of Gus
Gus is the sweetest, most loving dog you will ever meet. He has been to my first grade classroom to spend time with my students, goes camping with our family and loves everyone he meets both 2 and 4 legged. Gus is an amazing creature and truly the most gentle giant you will ever meet.
We are trying to raise the $400 it will take to get gus healed and ready to go into his forever home. The costs for Gus as of 12/12/04 are $700-$800 over and above what rescue has already paid for this boy’s treatment and unfortunately, Rescue cannot exceed the amount already paid to continue his much needed treatments. Can you find it in your heart to make big difference in the life of a big dog. Please make a donation to the fund for Gus medical care
